Brief on Sino-Irish Trade and Economic Relations

The China-Ireland bilateral trade volume only amounted to US$5.15 million when China and Ireland established diplomatic relations in 1979 and it has increased rapidly, especially in recent years. According to the statistics of China’s Customs, the trade volume of import and export between China and Ireland in 2006 reached US$5.46 billion at a growth rate of 18.6% compared to the previous year, and China has remained as the largest trade partner of Ireland in Asia.
In 2006, China imported 111 technology projects from Ireland with a total contract value of US$53.19 million, and introduced 16 Irish investment projects with contractual value at US$57.78 million and actual input of US$24.02 million achieved. By the end of 2006, the total number of Ireland invested projects reached 115 with the contracted value at US$261.95 million and actual input of US$83.43 million.
Nowadays, more and more Irish companies are doing business with their Chinese partners, some have made investment in China, some have set up their branches or offices there, and some are making preparations for setting foot on the huge market. And in the meantime, some Chinese companies have set or are going to set their business establishments in Ireland. And the economic and technical cooperation between two countries have extended from assembling, consultancy service and technical transfer to fields such as Hi-tech, ICT and agro-industry.
