Chinese Ambassador Launches Longford Enterprise Week

On 8th and 9th September 2008, upon the invitation from the Longford Country Enterprise Board, the Chinese Ambassador Mr. Liu Biwei paid a visit to Longford County accompanied by the Commercial Counsellor Mr. Xu Zhengbing. During his visit, the Ambassador launched the Longford Enterprise Week as a Special Guest.

The launching ceremony of Longford Enterprise Week took place in the Longford Town Council Office, with Mr. Michael Nevin, CEO of the Longford Enterprise Board as Chairman. Mr. James Keogh, the Longford Town Mayor and Mr. Gerry Brady, Vice Chairperson of the Longford County Council delivered their welcome speeches, and over 40 people from the local political, business and industrial circles participated in the event. Ambassador Liu, as the special guest and keynote speaker, launched the Longford Enterprise Week. In his speech, the Ambassador said that Ireland and China have maintained close economic ties in the last two decades. Trade volume between two nations increases dramatically from 5.15 million USD 30 years ago to 6.4 billion EURO today. Meanwhile, in recent years new areas in trade, bilateral investments and economic corporation have been further explored by both sides. The Chinese government welcome Irish investments, and encourage Chinese companies to invest abroad. Mr. Liu also spoke highly of the investment environment in Longford, and said that the Chinese Embassy wishes to make County Longford a better known name among Chinese companies, and to encourage Chinese investments into the county.

During their visit, the Ambassador and his party visited Cameron Ireland, a Longford based company. Cameron Ireland specializes in the manufacturing of valves for the oil industry, with its products sold globally. It has 245 employees. Its mother company, the US based Cameron International, has three investments in China.
